Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Kim Henchen. I am 38 years old and I have cerebral palsy.
My life has been a journey filled with many different experiences. My purpose with this website is to share these experiences
with you.
When I was a baby, my parents were told not to expect alot of me. Boy were they wrong!! I attended special classes until
6th grade. Then it was decided I should be in regular classes. So I got a full time aide and off to school I went. I eventually
graduated high school, and also got my two year degree at a local community college. It took me 8 years to get it, but I
got it!
I spent 18 years attending a day program at CPRochester. In 2001 I decided to look for other outlets for my interests.
I joined AmeriCorps and through them I learned about self determination---which is being able to manage my own finances and
how my time and money is spent. I will explain more about this on another part of this site.
In 2005, I left CPRochester to go out on my own. I now have my own personal assistant and my own van. I volunteer for
the Self Advocacy office. I also have a part time job with the Developmental Disabalities Service Office.
My goal for this site is to make more people aware of what Self Determination and Self Advocacy can do for them.
I will be including links to sites which may be of interest to you in finding out more information about the things I
am talking about, as well as links to some personal favorite websites.
